Vietnamese coconuts are distinct from other fruits because their endosperm contains a large quantity of clear liquid, called coconut water or coconut juice. Mature, ripe coconuts can be used as edible seeds or processed for oil and plant milk from the flesh, charcoal from the hard shell, and coir from the fibrous husk. Coconut flesh is high in fat and can be dried or eaten fresh or processed into coconut milk or coconut oil.
Mekong Delta, accreted by the alluvial soil of the Mekong River, is the best place to grow many kinds of fruit trees. The fruits, collected here, are always sweeter than in other regions of Vietnam. For the local people, coconut trees have a special place in their cultural life as well as the economic development process.
Coconuts can be found anywhere and everywhere in Vietnam. The fruit’s versatility is renowned. Juice, candy, rice, and meat dishes are all immensely popular, but only in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre you can find the Green Xiem coconut. It’s so special that it was recently granted a certificate of Geographical Indication.
Every Vietnamese at least once listens to the song “Dang dung Ben Tre” (Ben Tre girl’s posture). Throughout the song, the image of coconut trees has become the symbol of this land. Due to the importance of coconut in the material as well as the spiritual life of people in Ben Tre, since 2009, there has been Coconut Festival.
There are a variety of traditional products in coconut craft villages in the Mekong River of Vietnam such as coconut jam, coconut candies, and dishes made of coconut. Besides, tourists will be amazed by extremely sophisticated and eye-catching products made of coconuts with the skillful hand of artisans: colorful carpets, nice baskets, and other amazing handicrafts.
